The conversation continued tonight about our book club read School Smarts with Jim Burke (@englishcomp), this time discussing Chapter 3 about the First C: Commitment. Questions swirled about the connections between C1 and the other 3 Cs, about how we can measure or demonstrate commitment, about how to get students to know what commitment looks like. (Not surprisingly, references to coaching in various capacities - from debate to sports - as well as gaming came up in this discussion as places where we could make connections to our students in what commitment is.)

Our first book club kicked off discussing School Smarts with the author himself Jim Burke (@englishcomp).

We began with some really excellent (and insightful!) responses to Jim's question: "What analogy would you choose to describe the student you were (in the grade you now teach)? Explain!" We went on to discuss Jim's guiding question for this book: "Who succeeds in school--and why?" Much of the conversation centered around the idea of failure and how it is a necessary step in learning.
