The discussion tonight centered around how we may teach/study/share/discuss 9/11 with our students as the tenth anniversary approaches. Holly Epstein Ojalvo (@heoj) from the New York Times Learning Network was our guest-host for the evening.

Aug 29th #engchat w/ Holly Ojalvo of NYTimes Learning Network
I had the pleasure of meeting Holly at the #140edu conference and it was there we decided to plan an #engchat discussion around teaching about 9/11.
As our country marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we wanted to provide space for teachers to discuss possible teaching strategies around it.
Here are some thoughts from Holly and what we can anticipate during the #engchat discussion hosted by her on August 29, 7-8 PM EST.

I'm imagining we'll be talking about teaching ideas that English (and other subject) teachers can use to teach about 9/11 for the 10th anniversary and beyond, as well as ways to apply some ways that teachers have taught about 9/11 to other global, national, community or school crises. I will share my own experiences from teaching at Stuyvesant, which was 4 blocks from the World Trade Center, where a colleague and I did extraordinary projects in journalism and theater with students.
We'll also talk about using New York Times and other good resources out there and about ideas that teachers have sent into The Learning Network. I'm hoping for a lot of link sharing. And I hope, of course, that participants will share their own insights and ideas as well as questions and concerns. So I hope you'll join Holly and me as we try to continue to make sense of what it means to be an American on 9/11/11.
